Crochet Video Tutorial: Crochet Traditional Granny Square (1 yarn)


Try this Traditional Granny Square.

This is a great beginner granny square to try out. I say that because you never have to worry about what stitch to go into. You are crocheting into chain spaces. Like the ones you see above.

Abbreviations:
  • ch3sp and ch1sp = Chain 3 space, Chain 1 space
  • ch = chain
  • * to * = Repeat the instructions between the asterisks
  • beg = beginning
  • dc = Double Crochet
  • Corner = (3dc, ch3, 3dc) in corner chain 3 space
Hook Size:  I/9/5.5mm (5 UK ) 
Size: 7 inches (6 rows)
Chain 6 and join to form a circle

Row 1: Ch 3, do 2 dc in the ring, ch3, (Do 3dc in the ring, ch3)x3. Join in the top of the beg chain 3 to make the last corner.


Row 2: Ch 4 (the beg ch3 +ch1) 
(The ch4 will happen on every even row from now on.)
In the next ch3space do Corner, chain 1)
In the next ch3space do Corner, chain 1)
In the next ch3space do Corner, chain 1)
In the last corner space do (3dc, ch3, 2dc). 
Now join in the 3rd out of the beginning chain 4 to create the final dc. 

Row 3: ch3, 2dc in the next ch1 space (right below the ch3). ch1, 
Corner, ch1, 3dc in next ch1space, ch1, 
Corner, ch1, 3dc in next ch1space, ch1,
Corner, ch1, 3dc in next ch1space, ch1,
Corner, ch1,  join in top of beginning chain 3

Row 4: ch4 (the beg ch3 +ch1)
do 3dc in next ch1sp, ch1
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space,ch1)x2
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space,ch1)x2
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space,ch1)x2
Corner, ch1, 2dc in last ch1space. Join in the 3rd chain of the beginning chain 4

Row 5: Chain3, Do 2dc in next ch1sp right below the ch3, ch1, 3dc in next ch1space, ch1,
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x3
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x3
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x3
Corner, ch1, 3dc in last ch1sp. ch1 and join in the top of the beginning chain 3.

Row 6ch4 (the beg ch3 +ch1) 
do (3dc in next ch1sp, ch1)x2
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x4
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x4
Corner, ch1, (3dc in next ch1space, ch1)x4
Corner, ch1, 3dc in next ch1sp. ch1, 2dc in last chspace. 
Join in the 3rd chain of the beginning chain 4
