Earth Toned 6 Column Seed Stitch Crochet Blanket

Seed stitch is a basic stitch and it comes with video instructions

Closeup of the seed stitch design

Earth toned Seed Stitch Crochet Blanket
not made whole

I made yet another blanket for myself. I really like warm colors. These yarns really work well together.

I used Crochet's Seed Stitch to create this blanket. I used Impeccible Loops and Threads yarn, along with some Caron yarn, to make this blanket.

 I really love making blankets. They're so warm and comfortable.

For the video instructions on the Seed stitch go HERE
For a video on how to do the invisible sewing technique go HERE

Instructions:

Hook Size: K
Final Size: 42 inches by 61 inches

Seed stitch Pattern: Calls for Multiple of 2 + 1, Basically any odd # of sts.

Chain: 21

Skill Level: Beginner (there are no turning chains which can be confusing for some beginners)

Abbreviations:
SC = Single Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
* - * = Repeat the instructions between the *'s

Yardage:
Brand of yarn - Name of Yarn - Yards needed - # of Skeins

        IMPECCIBLE, LOOPS AND THREADS, YARN

  • TOPAZ: 378 Yards needed (2 skeins)
  • FERN:   378 Yards needed (2 skeins)
  • FOREST: 189 Yards needed (1 skein)
  • DEEP FOREST: 189 Yards needed (1 skein)

CARON, 1 POUND
CREAM: 300 Yards needed (1 skein needed)
GAUGE 3 sts. PER INCH

Pattern:
Row 1: do 1 SC in second chain from hook,* 1 DC in next chain, 1 SC in the next chain* Repeat across the row

Row 2: chain 1, turn… skip 1st stitch (normally you don't but for this pattern you have an "empty" stitch every other stitch), *1SC and 1DC in next stitch, skip 1 stitch*    repeat across the row. When you have 2 stitches left skip 1 and 1sc and 1dc in the last stitch.

Repeat row 2

FINISHING - Pic below:
Again, I have an invisible sewing video to help describe the instructions below. click here
Weave all ends on the wrong side of your work
I sewed the columns side by side. I do this because I don't like making them in 1 piece because it can get heavy.

To start I take 2 of the "columns" and put them face down. Thread your yarn needle and put it through the topside of your finished column, on the edge, and go through to the other column. Just "skim off the top" when you insert the yarn like your weaving the ends in. You don't want it to be seen on the other side.

Wait several inches before you pull the yarn tight. It's okay to have it loose at first. When I pull the yarn tight I put my palm down hard on  the areas that you've sewn then pull it tight. If you don't it will cinch up.

Also, it's a nice technique in case you use multiple yarns in your blanket. You won't be able to see the yarn you're sewing with. It will be invisible on both sides.

Used on several of my crochet blankets

  5. I was going to turn the computer off and go to bed ... then saw this. Absolutely lovely. I am so grateful to you for this stitch. It is so simple, yet the most beautiful thing. Thank you, thank you. I will be tired tomorrow (today, now) but I am starting a mint green and white blanket. I am just a happy clam with this wonderful textured pattern. Much appreciation to you for it.

  6. I think this is a great pattern for the men. I think I will make this in blue, grey, and black for my granddaughter's boyfriend. Love it.

  7. Just love the seed stitch. It works very well as a scarf, use the Caron yarn (very soft) and it will be a favorite.

  8. I was curious if you know how much of each color yarn you used and also the specific colors. I love the ones you used and would like to come as close as possible. Thank you

  9. How many chains do you do start with?

  10. I would like to do this in one panel instead of 6, as a newbie - how would I do this?

    1. Normally I would say just change yarn after so many stitches (whatever your design happens to be) BUT you would have to use multiple yarns when doing your chain. I don't believe that's possible That's why I do multiple columns then sew them together.

  11. I love this blanket and can't wait to make it. Thanks for putting this up for us. I do have a question though. How many rows do I do for each color within the column?

    Thanks,
    Nicole

  12. Hi Nicole, if you want the same length it would be 10 inches for each color.
    Thanks for the message!

  13. Thanks Heather. I'm assuming that the columns you made are running horizontally in the picture and not vertically? Also, I couldn't find the Topaz color so I'm using Vanna's Choice Rust. It looks like a pretty close match to the Topaz in the picture and the yarn feels like it is about the same thickness and softness. The Rust might be a little bit brighter than the Topaz but when I put all the colors together next to one another it looked very close to your blanket. Vanna's Choice is only 170 yards though so you need to buy 3 instead of 2.

    1. HI, Nicole. They are horizontal. Vanna Choice is fine. It's just as soft and the Impeccible yarn. I've used it many times. Have fun making it!!!
      Take care,

  15. Looks easy and fun. I have purchased the yarn; however, as your blocks of color are not the same size, what is the layout? - Marsha

  16. Not sure if my comment posted...since the blocks of color are not the same size, what is the layout you used and the size of the individual blocks making up each column?

  18. HI, It's listed on the post. I don't have a link to download it. You can highlight it with your mouse/touch pad then copy and paste it onto MIcrosoft word/Wordpad....which ever program you have to view documents. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks
